Shipping to and from Switzerland: customs clearance and logistics

Switzerland is not part of the European Union: every inbound or outbound shipment requires customs clearance. Franzosini SA operates its own customs offices at Chiasso, Stabio, Ponte Tresa and Gaggiolo — the main commercial border crossings in Ticino.

Our declarants handle definitive imports, temporary admissions, T1 transits, Regime 42 for intra-EU VAT exemption, and centralised customs account (PCD) procedures. Since 1 January 2024, Switzerland has abolished duties on industrial products: this simplifies imports but still requires correct tariff classification and documentation.

Documents required to import into Switzerland

To clear goods into Switzerland you need: commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin (EUR.1 if applicable), any authorisation for restricted goods (CITES, chemicals, foodstuffs). To export from Switzerland to the EU you need the T2L document or the e-dec electronic export declaration.

Swiss import VAT: 8.1% (standard rate) or 2.6% (reduced rate for essential goods). Payment is made via PCD customs account or cash at the border.
